About Wildlife Hazaribagh Forest Division
Hazaribagh Wildlife Division having Jurisdiction over 6 sanctuaries of Jhakhand with an area of nearly 731 Square Kilometre. These sanctuaries are namely, Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuaries located in Hazaribagh district, Koderma Wildlife Sanctuaries of located in Koderma District, Gautam buddha Wildlife Sanctuary spread out in Hazaribagh and Chatra Districts, Lawalong Wildlife Sanctuary situated in Chatra District, Parshnath Wildlife sanctuaries located in Giridih District and Topchachi Wildlife Sanctuary in Dhanbad District.
Out of 6 sanctuaries, largest in term of area is Lawalong and smallest is Topchachi Wildlife Sanctuary.
This division has 4 ranges namely Hazaribagh, Chatra, Koderma and Giridih Wildlife Range.
Its divisional office is situated in Hazaribagh District while ranges are situated at their respective districts. Koderma Range has two sanctuaries in its jurisdiction namely, Koderma and Gautambuddha Sanctuaries while Giridih Wildlife Range has two Parashnath and Topchachi Wildlife Sanctuaries.
1. Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary
It is situated in the Hazaribagh district of Jharkhand State. Earlier the entire area of the PA belongs to the Raja of erstwhile estate of Ramgarh and used to meet the privileges of royal family for shooting, sports and other types of entertainment. In the year 1954 this area was accorded the status of Sanctuary vide Revenue Department of Government of Bihar dated 7thAugust, 1954.
The sanctuary extended in a rectangular fashion and occupies an area of 186.25 km2 the Sanctuary is quite accessible and well connected by road, railways and air services.
Sanctuary has mainly three accessible entrances gates namely: Pokhariya Gate, Salparni Gate and Bahimar Gate. Out of these three gates, Pokhariya Gate is the main entrance Gate situated adjacent to NH-33.

The erstwhile Padma Naresh used this to catch wild animals. A bait used to keep at the center and deep well is covered with the grasses and leaves. Once the hunter moves towards bait, it get trapped in well.

The name got its genesis from sall trees. Sal Parni means leaves of Sall trees. This fall originate and flow from the dense forest of Sall trees of Hazaribagh Wildlife Sanctuary over the stream of it Lotwa dam is formed.
2. The Koderma Wildlife Sanctuary
The Koderma Wildlife Sanctuary is situated on the Chhotanagpur plateau of Jharkhand surrounded by forest area of Koderma districts, Jharkhand and Nawada district of Bihar.
It was notified as Koderma wildlife sanctuary by the Govt. of Bihar under Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 in 1985.
This sanctuarie is residence of Sloth bear, Indian Leopard and many colourful birds and spread over 150 square Kilometer of Area. It is having famous Dhwjadhari Temple.
Approach and Access
The sanctuary is situated on Patna Ranchi Road (National Highway-31) and approximately in the middle of Patna and Ranchi. The nearest railway station is Koderma, which is 10 km away from the entrance of Koderma wildlife sanctuary. This station has good connectivity with the other cities such as Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Patna, Puri, Ranchi, Bokaro, Dhanbad, Gaya, Banaras, etc. The nearest airport is Ranchi [175 km away from the office of Koderma wildlife range].
Koderma wildlife sanctuary has a wide range of biodiversity. Vulture, Jungle cat, Hyena (Hyena hyena Hindi-Lakarbagha), Common mongoose, Sloth Bear, Barking Deer, Blue Bull, Sambhar, Spotted Deer, Elephant, Indian wild Boar, Jackal, Amphanibis (Frog), Fishes and reptiles (Lizard, Python, Cobra, Karait, etc.) are present in good numbers in the sanctuary area.
3. The Gautam Buddha Wildlife Sanctuary
Gautam Buddha Wildlife Sanctuary is a unique ecosystem with beautiful undulating terrain bestowed with abundantly rich flora and fauna. Despite several biotic pressures, the sanctuary has been able to retain its glory of diverse vegetation.
The Gautam Buddha wildlife sanctuary is situated on the Chhotanagpur plateau and derived its name from Lord Gautam. It is spread in Hazaribagh and Chatra districts of Jharkhand and Gaya district of Bihar and extended over an area of 25947.92 Ha [13833.66 Ha is under the Gaya District of Bihar, 10005.44 Ha is under the Hazaribagh district and 2108.82 Ha is in Chatra district of Jharkhand]. It was notified as Gautam Buddha wildlife sanctuary by the Govt. of Bihar under Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 in 1976.
Approach and Access
The sanctuary is quite easily accessible, as it is well connected by road, railways and airways. National highway No. 2 connecting Howrah to Delhi passes right through the sanctuary. The P.A. has 2 entrances namely: Chouparan and Danua check naka. The Chouparan is approximately 50 k.m. from Koderma and Hazaribagh and 80 Km. from Gaya main town. The nearest railway station is Koderma, which is 50 Km. from the Chouparan and is well connected by national highway.
Koderma wildlife sanctuary has a wide range of biodiversity. Special attraction is Chausingha, barking deer, Spotted deer, which is spread out in sanctuary.
Tamasin is situated in Gautam Buddha wildlife sanctuary in Chatra district. It is made of two sanskrit words Tam and Ashin means darkness prevails. Roughly at a depth of 100 m, the rippling sound of water of this waterfall looks nothing short of mind blowing.
4. The Lawalong Wildlife Sanctuary
Lawalong Wildlife Sanctuary, falling in north-western part of the Chatra district of state of Jharkhand was previously owned by the tikait of Kunda Estate, who once upon a time used to organize big shikars here. This glimpse of history suggests that the hilly-forested terrain constituting the present sanctuary has been a favourite abode of wild variety of animal species since long.
Later on, owing to high density of wildlife therein , the area consisting 64 protected forests (PF) was notified as 'Lawalong wildlife sanctuary' on 07-08-1978.
The nearest railway station on the southern side of this sanctuary is Tori, situated at a distance of 66 km from Lawalong on Daltonganj- Ranchi – Muri – Jamshedpur – Gomoh railway line. The Gaya- Ranchi national highway NH 22, passes by the eastern fringes of the Lawalong sanctuary. Hazaribagh – Simaria – Bagra more road leads to Lawalong. The nearest airport is at Ranchi, which is at about 145 km from Lawalong. An international airport is at Gaya (Bihar), which is about 100 km from Lawalong and 80 km from Chatra.
The sanctuary is one of the significant wildlife reserves of Chhotanagpur plateau and supports a significant population of wildlife including the habitat of elephants and their corridor.
The habitat is also shared by Chitals, Wild boars, Black bears, Jackals, Porcupines, Hyenas, Pangolins, Hares, etc. The important bird species which can be spotted frequently are serpent Eagle, Paradise fly catcher, Kingfisher, Bee eater, Swift, different types of Babblers, Black drongo, Woodpecker, Lapwing, Peafowl, Pond heron, Egret, etc.
Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary
Parasnath Wildlife Sanctuary named after the famous Parasnath hills, stands with a glory of highest hill peak of Jharkhand (4480 ft) and located on the southeast part of Giridih district at about 35 km away from district headquarter Giridih. It is also about 13 km away from Dumari triangle of G.T road NH-2. The Parasnath hill is named after 23rd Teerthankar „Parasnath‟ and considered to be one of the most pious and sacred place for both the Digamber and the Swetamber sects of Jains. Twenty out of total twenty-four Teerathankars of jain sects attained “Moksha” at Shikarji mandir situated at the highest top of the hill.
The total forest area of the sanctuary is 49.3313 sq.kms, which lies between 23056' to 240' North latitude and 8605' to 86012' East longitude. It is very rich in wild fauna and comprises mixed deciduous forests with very high incidence of climbers.
The localised dampness here favours growth of plenty of lichens, mosses and ferns. The wild fauna comprises Leopard, Sloth Bear, Sambhar, Nilgai, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Langur, Monkey, Mongoose, Jungle cat, Porcupine, Hyaena etc. in addition to varieties of birds and reptiles.
Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary
Lying between 86°06' and 86°15' E longitudes and 23°50' and 23°56' N latitudes, the Topchanchi wildlife sanctuary has an area of about 12.89 square Kilometer. The forests here are of Dry mixed deciduous type with Dry peninsular sal in Baneshpur and Bawardaha, the other tree species being Asan, Bijasal, Dhow, Semal, Kendu, Piar, Karam, Siris, Sidha etc.
The grassland and bamboo crops are also present., Jungle Cat, Cheetal, Barking Deer, Wild Boar, Mongoose, Langur, Jackal, Fox, Wild Dog etc. constitute the mammal fauna here. the Topchanchi lake adds to the richness of the habitat and is visited by migratory winter birds too.
